Wow! What an incredibly busy summer we have had; C and I celebrated our 1st Anniversary with a weekend fishing trip in the mountains and loved every minute of it.
My Pops and I built this BBQ deck for C as my anniversary gift to him. It's not quite the traditional "paper" gift but it's close enough ;)

And we have been (im)patiently waiting to harvest from the garden which is chock a block full of beautiful, big, bushy tomato plants, corn, cucumbers, carrots, potatoes, ground cherries, spaghetti squash, asparagus, onion, brocolli and watermelon. We have harvested some carrots, snap peas and the garlic already! The garlic is drying now, and I can not wait to add it to what will hopefully be a whole lot of tomato sauce this fall.
A few of the other projects we've got going on right now are;
- Completing my little greenhouse which we have been able to make so far for under $30. We bought a few lengths of 2x4 for the framing and the hinges for the door. Other than that all of the material has been upcycled, reclaimed or leftovers from other projects around the house. I am so excited for it to be complete, I can not wait to start all of my seedlings in there for planting next spring.
- After reading about the history of Sourdough and discovering some pretty amazing recipes with Sourdough breads like this Bloomin' Onion Cheese Bread, I have recently started my very own Sourdough Starter. Did you know that Starters such as this one were handed down through generations and were some times kept for in excessive of 20 years!? Incredible! I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep mine for that long, but fingers crossed!
- Our town is currently running a Backyard Hen Pilot Project (which I unfortunately missed out on because it happened the month we got married and so we were a tad bit pre occupied with you know? Other things). So hopefully as of November this year, backyard hens will be "allowed" within City limits, with some pretty strict rules of course (maximum # of hens, no roosters, etc). I believe that this is a huge step forward in our areas perception of living "independently". I believe everyone should have the option to produce and/or raise as much food of their own as they can. That being said I'm not sure I'd agree with having a cow on my little .10 of an acre lot but hens, which take up very little space and are relatively clean in small numbers, are an excellent resource for urban gardeners/farmers/homesteaders. Hens also are great companions! So because of this we have designed a fantastic hen house using part of our existing garden shed, and hopefully starting next spring we can pull the trigger on setting up an awesome little home for 3 lovely little hens!
So for now we will continue to tend to the garden and keep working on the many projects we have going on at the house! Until next time my friends!
